Feature Story: BioDiesel
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel that is produced from domestic, renewable resources. It is made primarily from vegetable oils (including soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil) and recycled yellow greases (recycled cooking oil). Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. It can be used in compression ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. It can be used by itself or blended with petroleum based diesel fuels.
Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum based diesel fuels. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar.
Biodiesel has excellent lubricity qualities, and helps reduce engine wear and maintenance costs of vehicles. The blending of 20% biodiesel into petroleum diesel (B20) has a mileage degradation of only .17 mpg, and reduces harmful emissions like NOx, which contribute to smog and ozone pollution.
The demand for biodiesel is growing rapidly driven by energy security concerns, legislative requirements, environmental benefits, tax incentives and strong economics. Combined with the products many benefits, biodiesel is a viable alternative to petroleum diesel fuels.
United Energy Distributors, Inc. is a leading distributor of biofuels in the southeastern U.S. We are completing a biofuel distribution facility that has 340,000 gallons of storage capacity, a state of the art loading rack, and 880 feet of rail siding. We have the ability to distribute biodiesel and ethanol via rail cars, tanker truck, or less than truck load quantities.
